Still reveling in our aquatic exploits testing Costa Rica’s range of water sports after revealing hidden beach gems, my trusty sidekick Carlos yearned more adventure. “We’ve totally tapped budget backpacker mode this trip,” he calculated. “No reason we can’t keep exploring totally epic stuff here that won’t demolish the bank!”
I concurred itching for additional affordable thrills beyond breathtaking vistas snapped through my trusty viewfinder lens. Luckily in Costa Rica, possibilities for memorable active encounters never end, even on a tight budget.

Waterfall Canyoning Near Arenal
Scrambling along slick boulders behind our surefooted Ecuadorean guide Miguel, I relished refreshing spray billowing from a muscular jungle waterfall. “Get ready to rappel next cascade!” Miguel instructed cheerily. I peered queasily over the imminent cliff edge where the frothy Catarata hides a vertical 98-foot plunge into a deep emerald pool.
Clipping into my harness tethered to anchors above under Miguel’s watchful eye, I gingerly eased myself backward over the precipice clinging to the rope like life support. My nervous hesitation swiftly dissolved, rappelling smoothly down veiled by sparkling curtains of water, hooting exhilaratingly the entire descent.
We continued through a half dozen more lush ravines near Arenal Volcano, hiking beautiful trails between waterfall plummets. Rappelling and leaping from ledges into pools carved by the Río Fortuna felt incredibly liberating. No wonder canyoning adventures that explore cascades by descending through ravines and canyon passages using ropes, rappels and sometimes just bold jumps into natural water slides gain devotees worldwide!
I tallied the day’s adventures with Carlos over dinner: four waterfall rappels, three daredevil jumps, two wildlife sightings (a pair of monkeys and vivid green-and-purple butterflies the size of songbirds!), one wondrous hidden blue lagoon, and absolutely zero regrets or costs over our 100 dollar adventure budget.
Whitewater Rafting on Savegre River
Casually admiring scenic pastoral landscapes surrounding Manuel Antonio, most visitors overlook the Savegre River’s hidden ferocity…until the Class III rapids erupting out of nowhere! Our tube plunged down the waterfall cascade, drenching everyone again despite the quick reaction of river guide Marvin yelling “padding hard right, NOW!” Mid-chortle, I noticed Marvin looking oddly relaxed guiding 10 guests facing imminent peril…then realized he navigated these same rapids constantly. We were in trusted hands!
In between churning rapids, we drank in views of primary rainforest, small rural villages and farmsteads dotting the fertile Savegre region that looked lifted from pioneering eras. “Much traditional culture and biodiversity here survives relatively undisturbed.” Marvin noted proudly. Witnessing sustainable communities thriving harmoniously with wildlife like capuchin monkeys glimpsed chattering along the riverbanks highlighted a cultural immersion I’d never have discovered zipping through the countryside confined inside a tour bus.
“Those crazy unexpected rapids, getting drenched head-to-toe, admiring that gorgeous river scenery…what’s not to love, right?” Carlos enthused later drying his waterlogged shoes. No arguments there!
ATV Mountain Trail Tour
Bumping along rutted backroads caked with volcanic ash near coastal Playa Hermosa atop powerful 4-wheel quad bikes, Carlos and I traded exhilarated shouts. “Now THIS is an adventure!” My arms vibrated from the strain of wrestling the strong-willed ATV along the hilly windy path.
Cresting a ridge scattering dust in our wake, the shimmering Pacific Ocean exploded into view miles away along Costa Rica’s northern boundary. I sputtered to an awed halt, soaking up 360 degrees of emerald peaks cascading to the blue horizon in all directions. Costa Rica folded neatly within those commanding vistas, almost toy-sized. Humbling and energizing both to visualize how small we are against Nature’s grand backdrop – yet blessed to explore it via such an intrepid thrill ride!
Our guide Marisol promptly shattered the reflective moment by ripping past yelling “Try and keep up, slowpokes!” Laughing uproariously, Carlos and I sputtered back to rumbling life in hot pursuit along the Arenal highlands. Eat my dust, Marisol!
Ziplining Silver Wings Canopy Tour
“Looks way scarier on YouTube!” My friend Lea quipped apprehensively eying the cable and harness setup launching from 15 stories high amidst the lush cloud forest canopy. True, standing on that swaying platform initially tested nerves. But encouraging smiles from veteran guides soon enlivened Lea to take the soaring Superintendent zip line plunge face-first.
Sailing above exotic orchids and dense emerald foliage between the towering strangler fig and guanacaste trees inhabiting Monteverde’s mist-veiled canopy soon erased any lingering vertigo. “This is awesome – I feel like I’m flying!” Lea shrieked joyfully. Oversized flocks of noisy macaws and toucans Going Superman down nine separate cables running over a mile total kept our adrenaline pumping like kids all afternoon.
Flushed with my zip-lining success, I dared Lea onward to navigate Costa Rica’s famous suspension bridges dangling hundreds of feet over thickly forested ravines. “Thanks to you this is my best day yet in Costa Rica!” she admitted afterwards, despite a healthy newfound respect for heights after peeking through a few metal-grate bridges that revealed the shadowy jungle chasm looming directly under boots. Ah, sweet fearful victory!
